The Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF) provide learners with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them work in the following roles; teaching assistant, classroom assistant, learning support assistant, additional needs assistant, pastoral/welfare support assistant, bilingual support assistant or foundation stage assistant.

The roles must be under the direction of the class teacher, whose lesson planning and day-to-day direction set the framework within which the individual works.

In this unit learners will:
  • Be provided with the knowledge and understanding that underpins effective communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults 

Schools as organisations 

In this unit learners will:
  • Get prepared for working in a school 
  • Cover the knowledge and understanding of the school context 

Understand child and young person development 

In this unit learners will:
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of child and young person development and the factors, including transitions, which may affect development 

Understand how to safeguard the welfare of children and young people 

In this unit learners will:
  • Be provided with the knowledge and understanding required for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people 

Support assessment for learning 

In this unit learners will:
  • Gain the knowledge of the characteristics of assessment for learning and allow learners the opportunity to use assessment strategies to promote learning 
  • Be enabled to support children in reviewing their learning strategies and achievements 

Support learning activities 

In this unit learners will:
  • Be provided with the knowledge, understanding and skills to support learning activities 
  • Develop competence in supporting planning, delivery and assessment 

Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings 

In this unit learners will:
  • Cover understanding competence, reflecting on practice and the ability to evaluate own performance 

Promote children and young people’s
positive behaviour 

In this unit learners will:
  • Gain the knowledge of policies and procedures in school to promote positive behaviour and understand how to deal with poor behaviour 

Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults 

In this unit learners will:
  • Gain the knowledge and understanding of how to communicate with young people, build relationships and promote positive relationships between children 

Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people 

In this unit learners will:
  • Learn the policies and practices to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people 

Support children and young people’s health
and safety 

In this unit learners will:
  • Gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support children and young people’s health and safety 
  • Provide a demonstration of competence in recognising hazards and undertaking risk assessments in the work setting
