Welcome to How to re-engage reluctant learners. The aim of this course is to develop your knowledge and understanding of how to successfully re-engage reluctant learners. By the end of the course, you will have a clear awareness of some of the factors that lead to disaffection and reluctance.
In addition, you will explore how to work effectively with reluctant learners in order to build positive relationships and create the conditions for success. The course will also provide helpful guidance about how to adapt the curriculum and tailor your teaching to meet the needs of learners. By the end of the course, you will have had the chance to reflect on your practice and develop a practical toolkit of strategies to re-engage reluctant learners.
The course is separated into three modules of learning:
Module One: Exploring the Causes of Disaffection and Understanding Why Re-Engaging Reluctant Learners Matters
In module one, you will get to grips with what causes disaffection and why it is important to re-engage reluctant learners. You will explore the concept of motivation and think about how to support reluctant learners to develop intrinsic motivation and a growth mindset. In addition, you will consider how you can work positively with the school, parents and carers in order to support the learner to re-engage in the learning process. This will be underpinned by practical advice and guidance to enable success.
Module Two: Building Relationships and Rapport With Reluctant Learners
In module two, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of how to build trust, relationships and rapport with learners, looking closely at Blanchard’s ABCD model of trust. As you work through the session, you will explore how to manage yourself and your emotions when working with reluctant learners. Practical approaches will support you in understanding how you can create the conditions for success in your context, starting from the very first lesson with your learner(s).
Module Three: Adapting the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning to Re-Engage Reluctant Learners
In module three, you will build your knowledge of how to tailor both the curriculum and your teaching in order to re-engage reluctant learners. You will explore some key questions that will help you to decide what to teach, how to make it relevant and how you can build on prior knowledge. In addition, you will consider how Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction (2012) can offer practical help in terms of adapting your teaching to impact learning.
