In this resource set we focus on families and relationships with other people. We look at what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, and what we can all do in our day to day lives to have the best relationships we possibly can.


This resource covers the following themes:

What is covered?
What are the outcomes for pupils?
This story will cover the following topics:
  • Discuss what constitutes a healthy or unhealthy relationship, including the qualities of healthy relationships.
  • To identify that many families are different, but that they should all give children love, stability and security.
  • To consider different types of families and relationships, including marriage.
  • To understand what is meant by marriage as part of family life.
  • Discuss what constitutes a healthy friendship, recognise qualities and develop positive social skills.
  • Understanding our rights and responsibilities to ourselves and our friends.
  • Explore challenging friendship situations and empathise with others.
  • Sources of support available to them should they ever need it.
The outcomes of this story are:
  • I can talk about qualities and features of a positive, healthy relationship.
  • I can explain what an unhealthy relationship might look like.
  • I know that there are lots of different family types, including my own.
  • I can talk about ways that families can care for children.
  • I have a basic understanding of what marriage is.
  • I can talk about the important qualities in a friendship.
  • I can explain why I need to look after myself in friendships as well.
  • I know that there are different ways to help friends out.
  • I know I might need to make difficult choices if it means keeping everyone safe.
  • I know when a friend is asking for too much from me, and what to do about it.
