In this resource set we focus on the risks associated with being online, interacting with people online and showing respect to gain respect online and in the offline world as well.

What is covered?
What are the outcomes for pupils?
This story will cover the following topics:
  • To develop an understanding of the potential risks associated with being online.
  • To develop an understanding that not everything online is always accurate or truthful.
  • To ensure a child knows they should check with a trusted adult to confirm what they see online is true or false.
  • To ensure a child knows that friends they have made online, especially those they have never met, may not be who they say they are.
  • To have an age-appropriate understanding of what ‘online groomer’ means.
  • To understand some of the potential consequences of misinformation and disinformation.
  • To understand ways of working safely and effectively together.
  • To explore the impact of negative online behaviour and empathise with others’ feelings.

  • To understand practical ways in which we can make sure we are kind and considerate to others and express this positively in our behaviours online.
  • To understand what respect is.
  • To ensure children are aware of how to stay as safe as possible in different situations.
  • To understand why showing respect to others is important.
  • To reinforce how to manage issues online, including ways of getting help and advice.

The outcomes of this story are:
  • I understand that information found online, such as on websites, isn’t always truthful or correct.
  • I can understand that a person I have never met in real-life might not be who they say they are.
  • I know what the terms misinformation and disinformation mean, and some of the reasons why people might spread misinformation and disinformation.
  • I understand some of the potential consequences of sharing information about myself online.
  • I understand how messages online can hurt or upset people, even if they weren’t meant to.
  • I understand that when people message online, it is different to talking face to face.
  • I can give examples of ways to deal with issues that upset people online, including ways of getting help and advice.
  • I know why it’s important to think about what I say or write to someone online.
  • I understand what respect is.
  • I understand why showing respect is important.
  • I know why it’s important to think about what I say or write to someone online and offline.
  • I know some skills and strategies that I can use to keep myself and others safe online, including how to check information on websites and seeking adult help and support.
